networking (and all that!)

We've all heard about networking but what is it? 

Put simply it is the connection or connectivity between different items of hardware, i.e. a PC, printer, broadband modem and devices used to allow connection of these items. 

The basic elements of this connectivity are the hardware ( PC, printer etc) and software ( usually part of the operating system in Microsoft anyway).

So where do we start? first decide on what or where you want to connect. So if you have 2 PC's and would like to share data, printers or even a Broadband connection then you have the requirements of a network. With 2 PC's in the same location you can use a cable to connect from PC to PC. Both PC's would require a network Ethernet port, either found on board or by an installed PCI card. With these installed a 'Cross-over' cable can be used. This is a simple cable that is plugged in to each machine, and with a bit of configuration of the operating system will allow each machine to share data and printers. So sharing Broadband is just allowing the second PC to connect through the first, again a bit of software configuration.

That all sounds pretty simple but what about more than 2 PC's? This is a little bit more complex, but only a little bit. We again start with the PC's again all requiring Ethernet ports, this time instead of a crossover cable, we use standard straight through cables. The cable from each PC needs to plugged in to what is know as a switch, this switches data between each PC. These switches can also be used to plug in a printer or a broadband modem which could then be shared between all PC's. The printer or modem would generally have an Ethernet connection. There are now switches ( known as routers) that have built in broadband modems, print servers (allows a normal printer connection). These routers are generally much cheaper than individual items. Again a bit of configuration of the software is required and hey presto you have multiple PC's sharing data, printers, CD Writers, ability to play games and use the internet. 

What's next? Well I mention that you required cables to connect your PC's well that is not strictly true, you can buy network equipment that is connected wirelessly, which within a house or office allows the same connectivity without the cable. A wireless card can be installed in to a PC, and allow a wireless  connection. You can have a mixture of cable and wireless. There are even laptops with built in wireless connectivity known as 'Centrino'. You can also make a none Centrino laptop connect using a wireless PCMCIA card.
