There is a lot to say on this subject as we are noticing many more of these nasty programs but as a start  

Spyware & Adware is a generic name given to all types of nasty programs that can reside in your memory, registry, hard, removable and optical drives. They are also known for/as Datamining, aggressive advertising, Parasites, Scumware, Keyloggers, Dialers, Malware, Browser hijackers, and tracking components. They allow companies to monitor your Internet browsing patterns, computer use and inundate you with those annoying "Pop ups".

This software, similar to Anti-virus software, scans your PC for malicious code and programs. It detects and removes threats caused by among other things, key loggers, programs that log key strokes and sends them to ‘Unknowns’ on the web, and browser hijackers, that send you to obscure web pages when you enter an address in the browsers address bar.
